What is Fire Hydrant Testing?

Fire hydrant testing is a critical component of building fire safety compliance. It involves the systematic inspection, testing, and maintenance of hydrant systems to ensure they deliver adequate water pressure and flow in the event of a fire emergency.

Hydrant systems — including fire hydrant boosters, landing valves, and associated pipework — must be regularly tested to verify they are in proper working order. Without routine testing, faults such as seized valves, pressure drops, or damaged fittings can go undetected, compromising the safety of building occupants and the effectiveness of firefighting operations.

In Western Australia, building owners and managers are legally required to maintain fire hydrant systems in accordance with Australian Standard AS 1851. Essential Fire Services provides comprehensive hydrant testing across Perth, helping property owners stay compliant and their buildings protected.

Testing Requirements Under AS 1851

Australian Standard AS 1851 sets out the mandatory inspection and testing frequencies for fire hydrant systems. Each level of testing builds upon the last, ensuring that all components are regularly checked and the system performs reliably when called upon.

6-Monthly

Visual & Functional Check

Operation of all water supply and isolating valves to verify secure open position and correct labelling. Inspection of hydrant valves (above and below ground) for accessibility, hand-wheel security, and condition. Check all booster assemblies for accessibility, pressure gauges, washers, and labelling. Remote pump starting test to verify automatic pump activation. Verification of hydrant and booster connection compatibility with fire brigade requirements. Inspection of hose, branch pipes, nozzles, and couplings. Check cabinet condition and pressure valve settings. Verify block plan and pressure gauge schedule legibility.

Annually

Flow & Pressure Testing

All 6-monthly activities plus: partial opening of all hydrant valves to prove water presence. Verification of valve position indicators and testing of valve monitors. Confirmation of non-return valve operation and seating. Pressure-reducing station testing under flow conditions. Critical water supply proving test at most hydraulically disadvantaged location (using fixed flow meter or portable apparatus) to verify design flow and pressure compliance. For high-rise buildings, testing in each pressure zone. Functional interface control test with other fire systems. Complete site survey including pipework condition, hydrant obstructions, occupancy verification, and documentation compliance per AS 2419.1.

AS 1851 Section 4.4.3

5-Yearly

Comprehensive Assessment

All preceding activities plus: booster connection flow test per AS 2419.1. Hydrostatic pressure test at 1.5 times system working pressure. Change all booster assembly connection inlet washers and lubricate check valves (10-yearly). Fit new valve washers or gland packing on drain and test valves. Fit new gland packing and lubricate stop valve spindles. Fit new seatings to all hydrant valves and lubricate spindles. Renew water supply non-return valve seatings and gaskets. Verify all pressure gauges against calibrated reference.

Our Hydrant Testing Services

Water Supply Proving Test

Verification that system flow and pressure requirements meet design criteria using fixed flow meter facilities or portable apparatus at the most hydraulically disadvantaged locations.

Valve & Component Testing

Complete functional testing of water supply valves, isolating valves, non-return valves, and hydrant valves to ensure reliable operation under pressure.

Booster Connection Assessment

Comprehensive inspection and testing of fire brigade booster assemblies including connection compatibility, washers, pressure gauges, and valve seating integrity.
