Evacuation Diagrams

AS 3745 compliant evacuation diagrams designed from measured site audits. Clear, professional and installed where your people need them — so they know exactly how to get out safely.

Do I Need Evacuation Diagrams?

Under AS 3745, any building, structure or enclosure occupied by people — with the exception of individual dwellings — should display evacuation diagrams. These guide occupants to the nearest exits and designated assembly areas during an emergency, and show the location of fire equipment for first attack response. AS 1851 requires diagrams to be inspected annually as part of routine fire protection servicing.

What Is Required?

AS 3745:2010 outlines the requirements for evacuation diagrams, including:

  • A pictorial representation of the floor or area (minimum 200mm × 150mm)
  • The title 'EVACUATION DIAGRAM'
  • A 'YOU ARE HERE' location indicator
  • Designated exits (shown in green)
  • Fire-isolated stairways
  • Manual call points (MCPs) and emergency call points (ECPs) — shown in red
  • Warden intercommunication points (WIPs), where installed — shown in red
  • Main controls/panels for occupant warning equipment
  • Hose reels — shown in red
  • Hydrants — shown in red
  • Extinguishers — shown in red with appropriate colour coding
  • Fire blankets — shown in red
  • Assembly area location(s)
  • A legend indicating the symbols used

Do They Need Inspecting?

Yes. AS 1851 requires evacuation diagrams to be inspected every 12 months as part of routine fire protection servicing. The inspection verifies the diagrams against the current emergency plan to make sure everything is still accurate. This matters because evacuation diagrams are what people rely on to get out safely in an emergency.

The inspection of emergency response diagrams should include the following:

  • Verification of the diagram's accuracy
  • The diagram should be checked to ensure that it accurately depicts the layout of the building and the location of all emergency exits
  • Assessment of the diagram's relevancy to ensure it is still applicable and in line with the current emergency plan
  • The diagram should be checked to ensure that it is compliant with the requirements of the emergency plan
